The Montreal Longshoremen’s Union rejected a final offer for a new labour contract, leading to a lockout impacting nearly 1,200 port workers at the Canadian port handling 8.7 million metric tons in the third quarter of 2024. This will further slow Canadian imports and exports, already operating at partial capacity due to a separate dispute at West Coast ports.
The union representing longshoremen at the Port of Montreal rejected the offer due to the employer’s refusal to negotiate, leading to the lockout. The union adviser stated that if the MEA had respected collective bargaining processes, conflicts could have been avoided.
Terminals operated by Termont have been shut down by the union’s strike since Oct. 31, affecting 40% of Montreal’s container traffic. Following Sunday’s announcement, all longshoring at the port will be locked out, with only essential services continuing.
MEA’s final offer included a 3% salary increase per year for four years and a 3.5% increase for the subsequent two years. West Coast ports, including Vancouver, have also been mostly shut down since Monday due to a labor dispute impacting exports of canola oil and forest products.
