Dr. Shirin Towfigh is suing Medtronic, accusing the medical device company of stealing her patented design for a hernia mesh aimed at improving outcomes for women. Towfigh, a Beverly Hills surgeon, filed for an international patent in 2016 after experiencing post-surgery complications in her female patients.
In a lawsuit filed in Delaware, Towfigh alleges that Medtronic stole her design after signing a non-disclosure agreement in 2015. Medtronic filed its own hernia mesh patent in 2017, which Towfigh claims closely resembles her design. Towfigh is seeking damages of an undetermined amount.
Medtronic has a history of patent infringement allegations. In 2014, the company was sued for violating spinal correction patents, resulting in a $23.5 million award. In 2020, Medtronic was ordered to pay $106.5 million for infringing on a heart valve replacement patent. Towfigh’s case is ongoing, with Medtronic reviewing the complaint.
