Rio Tinto Plc approved the construction of a new 25MW solar plant at its Kennecott copper operation in Utah, increasing the mine’s total solar capacity to 30MW. The new plant will be next to the existing 5MW plant, reducing Scope 2 emissions by 6%. The project will be completed next year and create job opportunities for up to 100 laborers. Bechtel Corporation will manage construction. The 210-acre solar array will have over 71,000 panels containing tellurium, a byproduct of copper mining, making Kennecott one of two U.S. tellurium producers. Both copper and tellurium are essential for solar panels.
