One person has died and 39 others have fallen ill due to E. coli infections linked to fresh carrots sold by major retailers in 18 states, according to the CDC. The infections are connected to whole bagged carrots and baby carrots sold by Grimmway Farms in California, retailed by stores like Walmart, Target, and Kroger.

The CDC advises consumers to throw away any recalled carrots, which were sold under various brand names in stores across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. The recalled whole carrots had best-if-used-by dates ranging from Aug. 14 to Oct. 23, while the baby carrots had dates from Sept. 11 to Nov. 12.

Grimmway Farms has issued a voluntary recall of the carrots and is reviewing its practices in response to the outbreak. The company, now owned by private equity firm Teays River Investments, is working with suppliers and health authorities to address the situation and ensure consumer safety.
