Japan stocks closed lower, with losses in various sectors. Tokyo Stock Exchange’s main index dropped 0.97%. Top gainers included Tokyo Gas Co. (TYO:) up 4.94%, M3 Inc (TYO:) up 4.43%, and Taiheiyo Cement Corp. (TYO:) up 3.81%. Worst performers were IHI Corp. (TYO:) down 3.94%, Sumitomo Realty & Development Co. (TYO:) down 3.44%, and East Japan Railway Co. (TYO:) down 3.27%.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd. (TYO:) hit 5-year highs, rising 4.94% to 4,528.00. The Nikkei Volatility Index was down 5.63% to 24.65. Crude oil prices rose, with January delivery up 0.73% to $69.25 a barrel. Gold futures also rose to $2,663.30 per troy ounce.

USD/JPY fell 0.34% to 154.90, while EUR/JPY dropped 0.35% to 163.33. The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.08% at 106.53.
