Senate report slams airlines for raking in billions in seat fees
From CNBC: 2024-11-26 10:03:53
A Senate subcommittee criticized major U.S. airlines for collecting $12.4 billion in seating fees between 2018 and 2023, including extra legroom and preferred seats. While ticket-change fees for standard economy tickets have been eliminated, fees for popular or roomier seats have been added to increase revenue. The Biden administration is focused on eliminating these “junk fees.”
Airlines have been summoned to testify about their fee practices at a hearing called “The Sky’s the Limit—New Revelations About Airline Fees.” Airlines for America, a trade group representing major carriers, defended the industry, stating that air travel has become more affordable and customers have the choice to pay for what they want onboard. However, the report criticized budget airlines Spirit and Frontier for allegedly paying gate agents to enforce bag policies.
Spirit Airlines stated they are transparent about their products and pricing, treat guests fairly, and comply with all laws. Frontier Airlines did not immediately comment on the report. The report has stirred controversy and debate within the airline industry, with airlines defending their practices while facing scrutiny over fee collection and passenger treatment policies.
