President-elect Donald Trump appointed Kevin Hassett to lead the National Economic Council, filling a key role in shaping U.S. economic policy. Hassett previously served as the chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers and worked closely with Trump on issues like taxes and tariffs.
Trump also named attorney Jamieson Greer as the U.S. Trade Representative, completing his economic team. Hassett, 62, collaborated with Jared Kushner on immigration and supported ending waivers for countries buying Iranian oil. Trump plans to raise tariffs on Chinese goods and impose tariffs on Mexico and Canada.
Hassett, a former scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, has been nominated by Trump before. The president-elect also signaled his intention to nominate Scott Bessent as Treasury secretary. Trump cited illegal immigration and drug trade as reasons for the tariffs, set to be implemented after his inauguration on Jan. 20.
