Canada’s Competition Bureau is suing Google for anti-competitive behavior in online advertising. The watchdog wants Google to sell two ad tech tools and pay a penalty to ensure compliance with Canada’s competition laws. Google denies the allegations, citing plenty of competition in the industry.

An investigation into Google’s practices began in 2020, focusing on potential harm to competition in online ads. The U.S. Justice Department also pursued a case against Google for monopolizing ad markets. Closing arguments in the U.S. case were presented recently.

Google offered to sell an ad exchange earlier this year to resolve an EU antitrust probe, but European publishers rejected the proposal. This move follows a trend of increased scrutiny on Google’s advertising practices globally.
