Australia has appointed Tesla chair Robyn Denholm to lead a review of the country’s research and development performance to boost economic growth. The panel, which includes members from academia and business, aims to create a more purposeful approach to R&D and strengthen links between research and industry.
Australia, despite being one of the world’s wealthiest nations, struggles with economic diversification. A Harvard University index ranks Australia 93rd out of 133 countries in economic complexity, trailing behind nations like Uganda and Laos. The review seeks to provide an evidence-based pathway to stronger growth.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk, set to serve in the incoming U.S. administration, has criticized Australia’s Labor government over technology policies. Denholm, with a background at Juniper Networks and Telstra, will focus on the R&D review rather than her relationship with Musk. Forbes has ranked her as the 80th most powerful woman globally.
