Jet engine maker CFM International announced that a “more durable” high-pressure turbine kit for its LEAP-1A engines, which power Airbus narrowbody jets, has been certified by U.S. and European regulators. The update addresses durability issues faced in hot regions like the Middle East and Asia, with a similar solution being tested for LEAP-1B engines on Boeing 737 MAX planes. GE Aerospace also called the certification a “significant milestone” in improving engine durability and increasing production.
Durability issues with newer-generation LEAP engines and Pratt & Whitney GTF engines have worsened maintenance capacity logjams. Post-pandemic, turnaround times at engine repair shops have increased by 35% for legacy engines and over 150% for new-generation engines. It now takes two to three months for airlines to secure a slot at repair shops, according to Bain & Company.
