German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is confident he will agree on a joint strategy for Ukraine with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump after a phone call. Scholz emphasized the importance of giving the Ukrainian people a say, and his team is in direct contact with Trump’s security advisers. Ukraine is a key issue in Germany’s upcoming snap election.

Opposition leader Friedrich Merz, who could replace Scholz, suggested sending Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine, a move Scholz opposes to prevent escalating the conflict. Scholz recently announced new military aid for Ukraine during a visit to Kyiv, showing support to Russia’s President Putin that Berlin stands with Kyiv in the war.
