Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones fights sale of Infowars to The Onion, sparking court battle

Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones is going to court to block the sale of his Infowars website to the Onion news parody site due to alleged fraud and collusion in the bankruptcy auction process. Jones declared bankruptcy in 2022 to pay $1.4 billion to Sandy Hook families for defamation.
The Onion plans to re-launch Infowars in 2025 with less hateful disinformation. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez has expressed concerns about the auction’s transparency and will consider evidence at a hearing. First American United Companies, the runner-up in the auction, claims the process was rigged.
Sandy Hook families, Jones’ largest creditors, boosted the Onion’s bid by forgoing immediate repayment for future revenue. Jones is suing the Onion, Sandy Hook families, and the bankruptcy trustee to oppose the sale, arguing the legal judgments may still be overturned on appeal.
Bankruptcy trustee Christopher Murray insists the auction was fair, despite objections from First American United Companies. Elon Musk’s social media site X has also objected to the sale, claiming ownership of Infowars’ social media accounts.
