Authorities have arrested Luigi Mangione, 26, for the murder of UnitedHealth executive Brian Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel. Mangione was captured in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after being spotted at a McDonald’s. Charges of gun and forgery were read against him at arraignment, with bail denied due to flight risk.
Mangione was found with a “ghost gun” and a silencer consistent with the murder weapon. He also had fraudulent IDs, including a fake New Jersey ID matching the gunman’s. Mangione graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with dual engineering degrees and had ill will towards corporate America.
Thompson, 50, was shot outside a Manhattan hotel in a targeted attack. The suspect fled the scene, rode a bike into Central Park, and then took a taxi to a bus station in northern Manhattan. Shell casings found at the scene had “deny,” “defend,” and “depose” carved into them.
Mangione’s Facebook profile indicates he is from Towson, Maryland, and a former student at the University of Pennsylvania. He has degrees in computer science and lives in Honolulu, Hawaii. Thompson’s murder has sparked frustration over health insurance issues faced by many Americans.
Thompson had been the CEO of UnitedHealth Group’s insurance unit since April 2021. He was in New York for the company’s annual investor conference. UnitedHealth expressed hope that Mangione’s arrest provides some relief to Thompson’s family, friends, and colleagues.
