Federal Aviation Administration Administrator Mike Whitaker is stepping down on Jan. 20, leaving the agency without a leader as President-elect Donald Trump takes office. Whitaker had set production limits and increased scrutiny of Boeing after safety issues. Mark House will serve as acting deputy administrator. Trump has not yet nominated a replacement.
The FAA has experienced multiple leadership changes in recent years amid a turbulent period for the aviation industry. Trump’s previous nominee, Steve Dickson, resigned in 2022. The new administrator will need to oversee Boeing, address air traffic control staffing shortages, and navigate controversies in the space industry involving companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin. SpaceX has threatened to sue the FAA for regulatory overreach.
