Airlines are seeing a shift in passenger preferences, with travelers willing to pay more for front-cabin seats post-pandemic. This surge in demand has led to less availability for free upgrades, creating more competition for elite status flyers. Expect record crowds during holiday travel. Airlines predict strong demand and are increasing premium offerings to keep up. In 2026, Southwest Airlines plans to introduce extra-legroom seats in a generational shift towards a more premium experience for younger customers. The airline will retrofit its standard coach-only cabins and eliminate open seating, while keeping the number of seats on its aircraft largely similar. CEO Bob Jordan mentioned the high cost of adding a first class section, but didn’t rule it out in the future.
