Luigi Mangione, who is accused of killing UnitedHealth Group executive Brian Thompson, is being charged with federal murder and stalking crimes on top of state charges. Mangione allegedly planned the attack out of contempt for the health insurance industry and wealthy executives. He waived extradition in Pennsylvania and is now in New York custody.

Authorities found a notebook in Mangione’s possession expressing hostility towards the health insurance industry and wealthy executives. He intended to target the CEO of an insurance company at an investor conference. Mangione has been indicted on 11 state law violations, including first-degree murder. His defense lawyer claims he is being “overcharged” and will contest the charges.

Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania with a self-assembled 9mm handgun and a homemade silencer. He also had fake identification documents. Prosecutors say he traveled from Atlanta to New York before the killing and used his phone and the internet for planning. Federal charges could potentially lead to the death penalty, unavailable in New York.

Mangione is set to appear in court on federal charges in Manhattan. His lawyer has raised concerns about facing multiple charges. Supporters outside the courthouse condemned the health insurance industry. Pennsylvania prosecutors agreed to halt proceedings until after the New York case. Mangione consented to surrender to New York authorities.

Manhattan prosecutors are accusing Mangione of terrorism for Thompson’s killing. The attack was allegedly meant to intimidate or influence government policies. Mangione’s case continues to unfold as he faces a slew of charges related to the high-profile murder.
