Boeing secures a firm order from Pegasus Airlines for a hundred 737 MAX 10 jetliners, worth $5.85 billion, with options for another 100. The deal marks the biggest MAX order this year and boosts Boeing after a tumultuous year following a mid-air blowout in January. Boeing shares rose 2.6% on Thursday.
Pegasus Airlines switches back to Boeing after a decade with Airbus, surprising the industry. The budget airline has long been a battleground for plane giants, driving hard bargains. Airbus had no immediate comment on the unexpected reversal.
Boeing faces stricter regulatory oversight after the mid-air blowout, leading to significant production safety and quality problems. A strike shut down almost all production for seven weeks. The company raised $25 billion to shore up finances and cautiously restarted 737 production in December.
The U.S. FDA has not yet certified the MAX 10 and MAX 7 due to engine anti-ice system problems. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2028, with Pegasus considering converting options for 100 more MAX 10 aircraft depending on market conditions. CEO Kelly Ortberg expects Boeing to continue burning cash next year.
