The Biden administration plans to blacklist Chinese company Sophgo for illegally incorporating a TSMC-made chip into a Huawei AI processor. Sophgo, an affiliate of Bitmain, faces being added to the Entity List. TechInsights discovered the chip, leading TSMC to suspend shipments to Sophgo. TSMC has not supplied Huawei since 2020.
After TSMC discovered the chip, the U.S. ordered them to halt shipments of advanced chips to China. Huawei, impacted by U.S. export rules since 2020, has diversified and is at the forefront of China’s AI-chip ambitions. The company plans to mass-produce the Ascend 910C chip in 2025. Bitmain, a major player in digital currency mining, denies involvement in the investigation.
