The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration proposed a new process to streamline reviews of exemptions for self-driving vehicles without human controls. Efforts in Congress to ease deployment have been stalled for years, frustrating automakers. NHTSA is investigating autonomous vehicles after a pedestrian was injured by a GM Cruise vehicle.
The Alliance for Automotive Innovation supports the proposal to expand commercial AVs in the U.S. amid concerns over falling behind other countries. President-elect Donald Trump aims to ease deployment barriers for self-driving vehicles. Tesla plans to launch driverless ride-hailing services in 2025.
NHTSA is investigating 2.4 million Tesla vehicles with full self-driving after reported collisions, including a fatal crash in 2023. GM petitioned to deploy cars without human controls in 2018, then again in 2022 before withdrawing the petition and exiting the Cruise robotaxi business. Ford withdrew its self-driving petition in 2021.
