Jinjiang Group denies Brazilian authorities’ accusations of Chinese workers being “enslaved” at a BYD factory in Brazil, citing translation misunderstandings. BYD has cut ties with the firm that hired the workers and is cooperating with authorities. Jinjiang and BYD express outrage at the accusations, blaming “foreign forces” for smearing Chinese brands.

BYD is building a factory in Brazil with a capacity to produce 150,000 cars annually, set to start production in 2024 or early 2025. Brazil plans to increase tariffs on imported EVs to 35% in July 2026 from the current 18%. The Chinese embassy in Brazil is working to verify and address the situation.

Jinjiang emphasizes translation and cultural differences in the situation, sharing a video of Chinese workers denying passport withholding claims by Brazilian labor inspectors. Workers express their willingness to work in Camacari and follow laws diligently to complete the project swiftly. The workers have jointly signed a letter addressing the issues.
