Stocks closed narrowly mixed on Thursday after recovering from early losses. The Dow rose 0.1%, the Nasdaq fell 0.1%, and the S&P 500 edged down less than a tenth of a percent. Initial U.S. jobless claims unexpectedly decreased to 219,000. Most major sectors showed only modest moves, with brokerage stocks notably climbing. Overseas markets had a mixed performance, with Japan’s Nikkei up 1.1% and South Korea’s Kospi down 0.4%. European markets were closed for Boxing Day. Treasury yields edged down slightly. Trading activity may be subdued on Friday due to a lack of major U.S. economic data.
