S&P 500 closes lower on final day but finishes year up 20%

The S&P 500 closed lower on the final day of trade but finished the year with a more than 20% gain. The Dow fell 0.4% to end the year up 23%. The Nasdaq and Russell 2000 also closed lower. The market is closed on New Year’s Day. Tesla stock closed 3.2% lower despite news of its gigafactory in Shanghai entering trial production. Boeing shares ended marginally lower following a tragic air accident in South Korea. US Steel jumped over 9% after Nippon Steel made a bid for its acquisition. ISM manufacturing data is due. Crude prices rose on signs of growth in Chinese manufacturing, but are on track to end lower for a second consecutive year due to demand concerns. Crypto stocks, including Coinbase, Marathon Digital Holdings, and MicroStrategy, were sharply higher.
