Malaysia grants licences to WeChat and TikTok under new social media law, requiring platforms with over 8 million users to obtain a licence. Telegram and Meta Platforms are in the process of obtaining licences, while Google’s YouTube has not applied due to concerns over classification. Violations could lead to investigations and regulatory actions.

Malaysia sees a rise in harmful social media content, prompting authorities to urge platforms to increase monitoring. Online gambling, scams, child pornography, cyberbullying, and sensitive content are flagged as harmful. WeChat has 12 million users in Malaysia, YouTube has 24.1 million, TikTok has 28.68 million users aged 18 and above, Facebook has 22.35 million users, and X has 5.71 million users.
