Chinese state-owned plane maker COMAC plans to have its C919 jet flying on commercial routes to Southeast Asia by 2026. The company is also aiming for European certification for the aircraft this year. China Eastern Airlines has already incorporated Hong Kong into its C919 route network.
The C919, flown by Air China and China Southern Airlines, is positioned as a competitor to Boeing 737 and Airbus A320. COMAC hopes to identify potential issues before expanding to Southeast Asia. The company delivered 12 C919 aircraft in 2024 and aims to reach an annual production capacity of 150 in five years.
COMAC is prioritizing the Southeast Asian market over Western markets, where Boeing and Airbus are facing supply chain and labor challenges. The C919 needs international airworthiness certificates to enter the global market. COMAC is focused on increasing operational deployment within China before expanding internationally.
