Japan stocks closed lower on Monday, with losses in various sectors. The Nikkei 225 lost 1.65% at the close. Top performers included Ebara Corp., Furukawa Electric Co., and Suzuki Motor Corp. On the other hand, DeNA Co Ltd, IHI Corp, and Sapporo Holdings Ltd were among the worst performers. Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd. shares hit 5-year highs, rising 5.40% to 7,046.00. The Nikkei Volatility Index rose 4.76% to 21.79. Crude oil prices were down, with February delivery at $73.77 a barrel. Brent oil for March delivery fell to $76.30 a barrel, while gold futures dropped to $2,644.11 a troy ounce.

USD/JPY rose 0.25% to 157.63, and EUR/JPY increased by 0.27% to 162.55. The US Dollar Index Futures were down 0.07% at 108.72.
