Private sector job gains fell short of expectations in December, marking a 3rd consecutive slowdown

In December, the ADP jobs report fell short of expectations, showing a gain of 122K jobs compared to the expected 139K. This marks the 3rd consecutive month of hiring slowdown, well below the long-term average of 162K monthly. Small businesses added 5K jobs, medium-sized companies gained 9K, while large companies contributed 97K to the total. Services industries led the way, adding 112K jobs, with education & health services gaining 57K. Total private sector employment is now 8.2 million above pre-COVID levels. However, the pace of job gains has slowed, with annualized gains at 1.4% for the 3rd month in a row.
