A tentative labor deal was reached at US ports, averting potential disruptions. The ILA and USMX employer group must ratify the deal by some 45,000 members. The agreement is a six-year resolution in the tech-versus-labor battle. The deal was credited to President-elect Donald Trump’s support for the ILA’s anti-automation stance.

Father-and-son ILA leaders called Trump a hero for supporting the union in the talks. The employer group, including Maersk’s APM Terminals, also credited Trump’s leadership. The union and employers extended their bargaining deadline after a deadlock over automation sparked a three-day strike in October.

In a prescient move, Teamsters President Sean O’Brien spoke at the Republican National Convention, praising Trump’s toughness. Pro-union attorneys caution against interpreting Trump’s support for the union. Trump’s track record during his first term has been seen as not supporting unions. The NLRB issued rulings favoring businesses and making it harder for unions to organize workers.
