Starbucks has implemented a new code of conduct to improve safety and customer experience at its North American cafes. The updated policy includes prohibiting harassment, violence, alcohol, smoking, and panhandling, aiming to create a more welcoming environment. The change comes after a decline in customer traffic and sales.
Starbucks North America President Sara Trilling emphasized the need to reset expectations for the use of their spaces, highlighting the importance of providing customers with a clean and safe environment. The company’s open-to-all policy, implemented in 2018 after a controversial incident, is now being reevaluated to address concerns raised by employees.
In 2018, Starbucks adopted a policy allowing access to its cafes and bathrooms without the need for a purchase following a widely criticized incident in Philadelphia. Two men were arrested for trespassing after attempting to use the restroom without buying anything, prompting the company to close its U.S. stores for racial sensitivity training. The men later settled with Starbucks for an undisclosed amount.
