Record-High Retail Sales Mask Flat Consumer Demand

In December, total retail sales hit $729.2 billion, up +0.4% from the previous month but below expectations. Retail sales are up 3.9% from last year, with core sales at $586.2 billion, also up +0.4%. Core sales are +2.9% higher than last year. Real retail sales have remained stagnant at $229 billion for 3 years, indicating price increases, not demand. 10 of 13 retail categories saw gains in December, with miscellaneous store retailers leading. Consumer stocks like Amazon and Tesla are down, while consumer staples like Walmart and Costco are also seeing weakness. Defensive sectors are underperforming, suggesting investors are still risk-seeking.
