Chinese planemaker COMAC is ramping up production of its C919 single-aisle planes to 50 this year, aiming to manufacture 30 aircraft. The company is looking to compete with Airbus and Boeing in the international market. Currently, 16 C919s are in operation with plans to deliver 27 more this year.
COMAC’s growth strategy includes scaling up production and obtaining certification from foreign aviation regulators. The company expects to have at least 100 C919s in the fleets of China’s three leading state-owned airlines by 2031. In addition to the C919, COMAC is also developing a larger C929 wide-body jet.
The C919 entered commercial service in 2023 and is currently operating with Chinese airlines, including flights to Hong Kong. Aviation consultancy Cirium predicts continued delivery of C919 jets this year. COMAC aims to achieve an annual production capacity of 150 C919 aircraft within the next five years. Air China is set to be the first customer for the C929 wide-body jet, currently in the preliminary design phase.
