Sheryl Sandberg sanctioned for deleting emails related to Facebook data scandal

Meta Platforms’ former COO Sheryl Sandberg was sanctioned for deleting emails related to the Facebook Cambridge Analytica scandal, despite being told to preserve them. The judge believes the most sensitive exchanges are now gone, making it harder for Sandberg to avoid liability at trial in April. Sandberg must also pay the shareholders’ expenses.
Sandberg argued she rarely used her personal email for business and others were copied on messages. The judge imposed a higher standard of evidence for her defenses. The lawsuit stems from Facebook allowing user data to be accessed by Cambridge Analytica, harming investors and violating a 2012 FTC order. Zuckerberg may face a second deposition.
In 2023, a judge refused to dismiss the lawsuit, calling it a case of “truly colossal scale.” Shareholders also requested sanctions for Jeffrey Zients, a former Meta board member who used and deleted personal emails. The judge found Zients’ messages less relevant as he joined the board after the scandal and was not an officer.
