Trump transportation nominee will keep Boeing 737 MAX production cap in place for safety concerns

President Trump’s nominee for Transportation Department head, Sean Duffy, vows to keep cap on Boeing 737 MAX production until safety concerns are addressed. Cap was imposed after an incident in January 2024 where a panel blew off a new Alaska Airlines jet. Duffy aims to hold Boeing accountable and ensure quality.

Duffy plans to meet with Boeing leadership soon to discuss action plan for improving safety. He will work with FAA to monitor the plan’s adequacy and the future parameters of Boeing’s Organization Designation Authorization (ODA) program. The ODA program allows Boeing to handle some certification tasks.

In May 2022, FAA approved a three-year renewal of Boeing’s ODA program, which will expire soon. Duffy will collaborate with FAA and safety experts to ensure the ODA program’s effectiveness. Boeing has not commented on the situation.

Former FAA administrator Whitaker has stepped down, leaving the agency without a leader. The Trump administration has yet to nominate a successor or announce who will serve as acting administrator. Duffy’s nomination was approved by the Senate Commerce Committee on a 28-0 vote.
