Two U.S. lawmakers are determined to block arms sales to the UAE, citing their support for the RSF in Sudan’s civil war. The war has led to hunger affecting half of the population. The UAE denies arming the RSF, focusing on addressing the humanitarian crisis and calling for a ceasefire in Sudan.

The lawmakers, Van Hollen and Jacobs, are pushing to end the war in Sudan by withholding weapons to the UAE. The Biden administration promised an assessment on the UAE’s involvement in arming the RSF. U.S. law requires congressional review of major arms deals, with resolutions needing approval from both chambers of Congress.

The Biden administration approved a potential sale of GMLRS and ATACMS munitions to the UAE for $1.2 billion. Van Hollen and Jacobs filed legislation to halt this sale, aiming to draw attention to the conflict in Sudan. However, their efforts may not gain significant support due to the long-standing relationship between the U.S. and the UAE as security partners.
