CSX Q4 earnings and revenues fall below estimates, operating income decreases, stock performance lackluster.

CSX Corporation (CSX) reported disappointing fourth-quarter 2024 results with earnings per share of 42 cents, missing estimates by a penny, and total revenues of $3.53 million, below the expected $3.58 million. Operating income decreased 16% year over year to $1.11 billion, with expenses up 3%. Segmental performances showed improvements in merchandise revenues, while intermodal and coal revenues declined. CSX expects total volume growth in the low to mid-single digits for 2025, with lower coal volumes expected. The company’s price performance has also been lackluster lately.

In comparison, Delta Air Lines (DAL) reported fourth-quarter 2024 earnings of $1.85 per share, surpassing estimates, and revenues of $15.56 billion, driven by strong holiday travel demand. J.B. Hunt Transport Services (JBHT) reported earnings per share of $1.53, falling short of estimates, with total operating revenues of $3.15 billion, affected by lower fuel surcharge revenues. Both companies saw improvements in operating income despite revenue challenges.
