Alphabet’s Google is proactively shaping public perception and policies on artificial intelligence in anticipation of global AI regulation. The company is prioritizing educational programs to train the workforce on AI, aiming to foster better policy and open new opportunities in the AI arena. Google faces heavy regulatory scrutiny in existing businesses like advertising and search, prompting efforts to appease regulators in the EU by offering to sell a part of its ad tech business. The US Justice Department is also seeking to force a breakup of Google’s Chrome Web browser.
Governments worldwide are drafting new regulations on issues that could be impacted by AI, such as copyright and privacy. Google executives see an opportunity to influence the narrative around AI and address fears of job loss by investing $120 million in AI education programs. The company is expanding Grow with Google to offer specialized AI courses and is collaborating with community colleges to train workers for potential jobs, incorporating AI education into the program.
In the long term, Google expects only a small fraction of existing jobs to be completely displaced by AI, with most jobs incorporating AI in some capacity. Economist David Autor, hired by Google to study the impacts of AI on the workforce, suggests using AI to create more immersive training programs rather than traditional classroom training for adult retraining.
