California pauses home energy rebate program amid Trump funding freeze

From CNBC: 2025-03-05 14:54:49

California has paused rebate programs offering thousands of dollars to consumers making homes and appliances energy efficient due to a freeze on federal funding. Other states have also halted programs, putting $582 million at risk. Rebates were created through the Inflation Reduction Act, with maximum amounts varying per household.

The fate of the freeze on disbursement of federal funds for energy rebates is uncertain as legal challenges are weighed. The U.S. Department of Energy did not provide comment. California, approved for the second-largest tranche of funding, paused its program. Texas received the largest funding, but the status of its program is unknown.

Since Jan. 31, California has been unable to access funds for administrative costs and the U.S. Energy Department removed information about the rebate programs from its website. Some states, like Maine and North Carolina, continue to offer rebates, with varying risk tolerances for program administration.
