In January 2024, 283 million XRP was stolen from Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen’s personal accounts due to a LastPass breach, as revealed by a forfeiture complaint. The stolen XRP would be worth $683 million on March 7. LastPass suffered two breaches in 2022, leading to the compromise of encrypted passwords and data.
Following the theft, ZachXBT traced the stolen tokens across various crypto exchanges like MEXC, Gate.io, Binance, and Kraken. LastPass hackers stole an additional $45 million from crypto holders in December 2024. Storing private keys online is risky, with experts recommending offline storage like USB or writing them down.
While storing private keys online is risky, password managers can still play a role in generating and storing complex passwords for added security. Seed phrases and private keys stored on LastPass before 2023 are considered at risk. Security Alliance advises against storing sensitive crypto information online to prevent hacking incidents.
