Australian stock market trims early gains, with energy stocks up and major miners down

The Australian stock market is slightly paring back early gains, with the S&P/ASX 200 rising 0.23% to 7,871.90. Energy stocks are performing well, while major miners like BHP Group and Fortescue Metals are seeing slight declines.

Oil stocks are mostly up, with Santos and Origin Energy gaining 1% each. Among tech stocks, Afterpay owner Block is up 3%, but Appen is down almost 5%. Gold miners are mostly lower, with Gold Road Resources slipping almost 5% due to lower expected output.

New Hope Corp. shares are up over 8% after a strong interim profit growth and dividend increase. The Aussie dollar is trading at $0.638.
