Energy regulators have approved the Southwest Power Pool to expand its territory, becoming the first regional U.S. grid operating in both western and eastern interconnections. SPP manages electricity flow and markets, competing with other RTOs. The expansion will include 17 states and allow new members to participate in the market by 2026.

Colorado Springs Utilities CEO Travas Deal stated, “An adaptable electric grid with access to both local and regional resources is essential for managing customer costs and maintaining service reliability.” The expansion of the SPP RTO is expected to help achieve this goal.
