US authorities to return $7 million to victims of fake crypto investment scam

US authorities are working to return $7 million to victims of a social engineering scam involving fake crypto investment platforms. Fraudsters gained victims’ trust, directed them to fake websites, and funneled funds through 75 bank accounts, deceiving victims into sending more money. The Secret Service seized some funds and reached a settlement for $7 million.
Australian police warned 130 people of a message scam targeting crypto users, spoofing legitimate crypto exchanges like Binance. Another scam spoofed Coinbase and Gemini, tricking users into setting up a new wallet controlled by fraudsters. Malwarebytes warned of a crypto-stealing malware disguised in a “cracked” version of TradingView Premium.
Microsoft’s Incident Response Team discovered cyber scammers using a new remote access trojan targeting crypto in 20 cryptocurrency wallet extensions for Google Chrome. Chainalysis reported a rise in professional cyber syndicates dominating crypto crime. Victims of the $7 million scam are urged to contact the Secret Service to recover their losses.
