In part two of The General Counsel Report 2025, it was found that over two-thirds of general counsel are interested in using generative artificial intelligence in the legal department. Approximately 65% of legal departments plan to invest in new technology in the upcoming year, with 30% looking into generative AI. The report also shows an increase in generative AI use over the past year, with 44% of general counsel now utilizing it. Despite growing interest, some concerns remain regarding the viability, reliability, and cost of the technology.

The report also highlighted that 75% of legal departments lack a technology roadmap, making it challenging to plan and allocate budget effectively. Additionally, general counsel are increasingly relying on law firms to address rising risks and demand. Interestingly, general counsel in Latin America are more comfortable with AI in e-discovery compared to those in Asia Pacific. Although generative AI adoption is rising, some are still hesitant about its use in investigations. The overall readiness for technology in the legal field has improved slightly from the previous year.
