OpenAI is projected to triple its revenue to $12.7 billion this year and aims for $29.4 billion by 2026. The company hit 1 million paid users last September and offers a $200 monthly ChatGPT Pro option. OpenAI expects to reach $125 billion in revenue by 2029 but won’t be cash-flow positive until then.

Competition is fierce between US and Chinese AI players, with Baidu and Alibaba launching their own models to compete with DeepSeek’s R-1. Tencent and DeepSeek also released new models recently. Chinese AI firms are catching up to US counterparts, with DeepSeek narrowing the gap to just three months. OpenAI plans to release GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 soon with advanced features.

Balaji Srinivasan notes that Chinese AI models are putting pressure on US companies with their cheaper and often newer options. Lee Kai-fu states that Chinese AI firms are now only three months behind US counterparts, a significant improvement from previous gaps. OpenAI is facing competition from Anthropic, DeepMind, xAI, and Google’s Gemini in the US market.
