Researchers from the University of Birmingham and Imperial College London launch the 4D Health Tech initiative for medical device manufacturing. The project aims to incorporate growth, movement, and tissue factors often overlooked in traditional design processes. With £1.2m in funding, the three-year project will connect academics, businesses, clinicians, and policymakers.
The funding is part of a £10m package from EPSRC to address Tomorrow’s Engineering Research Challenges, emphasizing a re-manufacturing approach for sustainability. Dr. Sophie Cox highlights the neglect of time in medical device design, compromising function. The project seeks to transform medical device engineering, focusing on improved healthcare outcomes and patient diversity.
In the medical device sector, companies are increasing investments in 3D printing for custom prosthetics, implants, and tools. GlobalData projects the medical 3D printing market to reach $4bn by 2026, growing at a CAGR of 21%. The initiative aims to enhance healthcare outcomes through innovation and patient-focused design.
