The sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) industry is not meeting its 2030 targets, with production lagging behind, according to a report by Boston Consulting Group. European airlines aim to use 6% SAF by 2030, but high costs remain a barrier as airlines and airports invest only 1-3% of revenue in SAF. Low consumption and policy delays in China are also hindering progress towards net-zero emissions by 2050. Despite a 1,150% increase in global SAF supply, new production facility announcements dropped due to economic uncertainty and higher costs. BCG projects a 30-45% shortfall in meeting aviation’s 2030 targets, calling for industry collaboration to address challenges.
