GM reports robust first quarter sales as industry braces for tariffs
From CNBC: 2025-04-01 11:30:00
General Motors and other automakers are seeing significant increases in first quarter U.S. vehicle sales ahead of President Trump’s auto tariffs taking effect this week. GM reported a 16.7% jump in sales, led by gains in all-electric vehicles like the Cadillac Escalade IQ. Hyundai and Honda also reported gains, while Ford saw a 1.3% decline due to discontinuing the Ford Edge SUV last year.
The industry is preparing for 25% tariffs on imported vehicles starting Thursday, with potential additional reciprocal tariffs looming. J.D. Power forecast strong March sales as consumers rushed to buy before potential price increases. Ford’s decision to end Edge production in Canada was not related to the tariffs, and its retail sales excluding fleet business actually increased 5% year-over-year.
