OpenAI secures $40 billion in funding round led by SoftBank, valuing the company at $300 billion. CEO Sam Altman aims to make AI more useful in daily life with this investment. The round includes $30 billion from SoftBank and $10 billion from investors like Microsoft, the largest ever raised by a private tech firm.
New funding allows OpenAI to advance AI research, expand computing infrastructure, and enhance tools for ChatGPT’s 500 million users weekly. Partnership with SoftBank aims to drive scientific discovery, personalized education, human creativity, and progress towards AGI for global benefit.
Funding provided in two parts, with $18 billion allocated to joint venture Stargate formed with SoftBank and Oracle. Valuation places OpenAI among highly valued companies like SpaceX and ByteDance. SoftBank may reduce contribution to $20 billion if OpenAI doesn’t complete conversion to for-profit status by year-end.
Previous funding in October 2021 saw OpenAI raise $6.6 billion at a $157 billion valuation. ChatGPT’s user base grows to 500 million weekly, with revenue expected to triple to $12.7 billion by 2025.
