An Indian court has ordered Wikipedia to remove defamatory statements about a domestic news agency, ANI, from its page. Last year, ANI sued Wikimedia for defamation, seeking removal of content that criticized it as a government “propaganda tool.” The court ruled the statements were defamatory and ordered their removal. ANI seeks damages of about 20 million rupees and an apology from Wikimedia. Wikimedia has raised concerns about free speech in India due to the dispute. The court ordered the takedown of a related Wikipedia page in October, prompting Wikimedia to appeal to the Supreme Court. Wikimedia argued that the takedown restricts free speech and access to knowledge. X, formerly Twitter, is also challenging government orders to block posts about Indian farmers’ protests in 2021.
