ATBS says independent drivers earned a little more in ’24 but drove more as well

In 2024, independent truck drivers made slightly more money than in 2023, with average earnings at $64,000. Full-time drivers earned about $86,000. Top 10% made $215,000. Despite higher incomes, drivers worked harder, with average mileage up 4%.
Diesel prices fell, benefiting drivers, but not enough to offset the decline in rates. Amen suggested drivers focus on maximizing revenue through hard work and productivity. He advised against avoiding cheap freight, emphasizing the importance of understanding costs and making strategic business decisions.
ATBS President Todd Amen discussed the impact of B-1 drivers on trucking capacity at the 2025 Truckload Carriers Association meeting. Landstar’s falling capacity and stagnant rates were noted. Amen highlighted the challenges of illegal freight hauling by B-1 drivers in the U.S., affecting wages and market conditions.
