Meta Platforms, formerly known as Facebook, plans to invest nearly $1bn in a data centre project in central Wisconsin to enhance AI and cloud infrastructure. The state reached an agreement with an unidentified company, likely Meta, for the project. Meta aims to spend up to $65bn in 2025 on infrastructure projects, including AI-related facilities.

The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation typically reveals companies involved in projects once contracts are approved. Meta already operates data centres in the US Midwest and is expanding its infrastructure investment, including a new facility in Louisiana. The proposed Wisconsin data centre will join a growing number of large-scale facilities across the country.

Meta is integrating AI into its products, from targeted advertising on Instagram to its consumer hardware like Meta Quest headsets and Ray-Ban smart glasses. The company is exploring the development of a new data centre campus to support AI projects, with estimated costs exceeding $200bn. Meta is also negotiating a financing package around $35bn to bolster its data centre infrastructure.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg anticipates Meta’s total AI-related investment could reach hundreds of billions of dollars. Wisconsin is attracting other companies for data centre projects, with Microsoft announcing a $3.3bn investment for AI infrastructure. The state is also being considered for OpenAI’s $500bn Stargate initiative to expand AI infrastructure nationwide.
