April 8, 2025 08:13:00 AM:
Weekly active developers in the crypto space dropped by almost 40% in one year, with only 7,600 active developers on March 16, down from 12,380 on March 17. This decrease indicates a 38.6% drop in developer activity. Developer activity is crucial for the health and sustainability of the Web3 ecosystem.
The decline in developer activity has led to calls for more developer-led narratives in the Web3 space. Optimism contributor Binji Pande highlighted the shift in attention, drying up of incentives, and faster speculation over utility. Pande emphasized the importance of supporting developers and focusing on end-to-end products, not just code.
In response to the lack of developer-led narratives, developer Ben Ward noted that the crypto space has prioritized protocols with products, leading to the rise of memecoin casinos. Memecoins have become the most profitable narrative in the Web3 space, with the frenzy extending into 2025. Pande stressed the need to refocus on building products that people actually want to use.
